Partition table

What do /dev/ mean? Once I had /hda5 , /hda1 or so. After trying to install Mandrake9.2 on this main machine, have /dev/ in front of each partitions. none for /dev/shm is so curious.
Yes, it is virtual memory file system, but before the trouble yesterday, I've never seen this name.
