IE8 will show pages requesting “Standards” mode in IE8’s Standards mode. Developers who want their pages shown using IE8’s “IE7 Standards mode” will need to request that explicitly (using the http header/meta tag approach described here).

開発者やユーザーからの激しい抗議を受けた後、Microsoftは圧力に屈し、Acid2テストに合格した新たな標準モードを「Internet Explorer 8」（IE8）のデフォルトとする予定である。
米Microsoftは3月3日 (現地時間)、開発中のInternet Explorer(IE) 8で、同バージョンのスタンダードモードをデフォルトレンダリングにすることを明らかにした。

Microsoftは、かねてより「Acid2」テストの合格基準を満たすとしてきたIE8について、登場当初より、標準準拠モードのレンダリングエンジンをデフォルトとする意向を明らかにした。
Web標準Blog では、「他のWebの実装や、Web標準によるデザインがが徐々に普及しつつある現状を考えると、標準準拠度の低いブラウザを基点にすることは好ましくありません。」と書いていますが、日経トレンディが書いているところからたどって見ると、現代の Netscape 4 とでも言って良い IE 6 にしがみつく保守派が日本では多くなりそうです。
