IE も Opera 方式を採用へ

Compatibility View Improvements to come in IE8 を読み進めるうちに、これは全く Opera が override_downloaded.ini や browser.js でやっている方式と同じではないかと思っていたら、その下の方の行に次のように書かれていて二度驚いた。

IE8 is not the first browser to consider making website compatibility fixes for specific highly trafficked sites. Opera has “a feature that allows Opera to automatically fix incompatible Web pages.” It’s “automatically distributed by Opera Software ASA, and can be used to apply fixes to specific Web sites.”

• 上記中、引用符の付いている箇所は Browser JavaScript explained からの引用のようだ。

override_downloaded.ini は特定のサイトで Opera の UA strings を他のブラウザに自動的に変える設定ファイルで、Browser JavaScript と共に相互運用性を高める仕組みである。
Web 標準への対応を高めた結果、過去の IE 向けに作られているサイトで表示の崩れや非動作などの問題に直面する IE 8 は、ユーザが手動で Compatibility View ボタンを押して対応する他、設定変更ファイルを自動配信し対応させる Opera 方式を採用する予定だというのが、上記 blog 記事である。
